DSB will not be going offline. I have reversed my previous decision.

A detailed explanation can be found here on the DSB boards:

Are you trying to kill SS even faster? Why do YOU get to say when it shuts down? It should be up to the players. YOU can stop paying for the servers etc, but why not let someone else carry on? Go out with 'glory'? In a spaceship game? I don't even play DSB but you sound like a narcissistic cock-sucker.

I totally agree with LiDDiS. What is the POINT in shutting down a zone now? It's just going to make more people quit SS faster, plunging it into further decline. Idiotic decision.

This is a very selfish decision which SSC should not allow.

DSB is still one of the major zones in SubSpace that is keeping the game alive
The most tragic part about this is that DSB itself has the potential to revive itself.
There's been plenty of good ideas to make that happen...

DSB is suffering from the same thing that so many other great zones suffered: mismanagement.

If the zone owners decided the zone should be closed, then let them close it. It's not a huge deal; this is a player-run game. If somebody else wants to step up and make a rip-off zone then there's literally nothing stopping them other than a few insignificant points. Personally, I'd rather see zones be shut down than dwindle and face flocks of bad management.

Maybe this will also let some of the smaller zones get their chance at a population spike. Or whatever, really.

Good luck.

This is an amazing idea! I should have taken this same approach with my grandfather and killed him at 60 years old rather than letting him live out his life, get old and die naturally 24 years later.

You, sir, are a visionary.

That's not what he's saying though. He's going to try and block anyone from making a new clone zone or taking over DSB. It's funny because he didn't even make DSB, he's just the guy that's been running it for a while. Too bad for him though, someone will step up and pay for a server, and DSB will keep on. And there's not a thing he can do about it. He is a Lawyer though, maybe he'll sue whoever takes over DSB. (HAHAHAHAHAHA)

Super boring zone anyways. 17th Parallel is almost back to its "classic" settings, maybe some people will go back there (and then suffer its own mismanagement anew!).

I still didn't catch the part of "why" you're shutting the zone down...

I'm locked out of the zone now anyway, how fun :P (edit: read this topic to know why)

But yeah........ I'm sure someone out there will be willing to take over, or start something else from it. Going out on a high won't help anything, imo.

How can anyone think it's a good idea to tell other people when to stop having fun playing the game? If DSB was a graveyard it'd be one thing, but it's not. If you want to stop hosting a server, or stop administrating, that's fine. Don't submit to defeat and assume your zone will never grow and thrive (more than it already is, sheesh) again. It might not, but it certainly won't if you don't give someone the chance to try.

We, the players of SSCU Death Star Battle hereby humbly request the SubSpace Council to remove hoch as owner of SSCU Death Star Battle. Hoch has been appointed as sysop to look after the well being of DSB when loops & chy decided to move on. It has become obvious he longer has the well being of DSB at heart, when he, without consulting the community, decided to kill DSB prematurely. As such it is the obligation of every DSB player to take measures to remove hoch and appoint new leadership.

Sysops are appointed to look after the well being of the community, the development of the zone and the appointment of staff. Hoch has shown no interest in upholding these obligations, and therefore, we the players appeal to SSC to remove him.

Upper DSB staff consists of beer hunter, liito and angelu$. None of these players have shown any initiative to improve DSB the past year(s), or do anything but the bare minimum one might expect from a member of upper staff. Under hoch's guide the pro-active members of staff have one by one departed. This trend has been going on for years starting with staffers like mozart or wicked angel in '04/'05, and ending with the_snake past month. Now none are left.

The development of DSB has been structurally obstructed by hoch. Every effort to move to ASSS and exploit the possibilities of this server software has been shot down. Every effort to modernise league has met similar deaf ears. The marginal changes to pub have been poorly implemented by upper staff's unwillingness to co-operate. Is it strange then, that the zone stagnates?

Signals from the community have been long neglected by hoch's administration. By a refusal to make regular appearances on the zone and talk to players, he has more than shown his disdain for the community he hosts. An absent host is no host at all.

Steps have been made to secure a new server for DSB, and this clone stands ready. Should worst come to worst, we are ready to host a new DSB once the present one is disconnected from billing. We hope it does not come to this and that hoch departs peacefully, handing over the zone in tact.

For these reasons and more we request of the SubSpace Council to remove hoch as legitimate sysop of DSB, so that new leadership might take his place. We propose that the_snake will be appointed as new head sysop, so that he might appoint new sysops for league, development and moderation. Under his administration we hope that DSB might flourish once more.

Sincerely,

the undersigned.

How exactly can Hoch stop anybody making a rip-off? If he thinks he can do such a thing, then he's delusional. If the zone dies, it's just as abandon-ware as Subspace and Continuum are. The only people stopping players using maps and settings are the creators of the maps and settings, not the zone owners. There are plenty of people around that are willing to shell out money for hosting, or are already hosting zones and are happy to host new zones. Ultimately, Hoch manages the zone, and to the best of my knowledge pays the fees for the server. If he's serious about shutting down the zone, then the most sensible thing for anybody to do would be set up a similar zone, and prepare it for when DSB does finally go offline.

Personally, if Hoch is really preventing all of the development etcetera then this sounds like a god-send. Any developers who actually want to develop something new are free to. Top-end hosting is provided for free in the community by more than a few people, and it just leaves plenty of space for innovation.

As I said, good luck.

It would cause a major inconvenience to switch to a completely new server though.
We've seen how other zones actually died doing that, so if that can be avoided it would be good.
Then there's also the issue of who would get to make the new zone, because there's
more than just one group who can and would want to start it back up.

Therefore it would be in the best interest of the players and hence the SS community
if the council intervened and let us manage the zone as it is. Sign the petition ;P
